Maharashtra voters swell by 91 lakh in five years

PUNE: The number of voters in Maharashtra has gone up by 91 lakh in the last five years, according to official figures for the upcoming assembly polls in the state. From 8,07,98,823 voters in the state at the time of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the number has now touched to 8,99,36,261 voters as per the electoral office data.

This is a sharp rise of 91,37,438 voters for the upcoming assembly elections on October 21.


Of the total voters, the youth voters in the age group of 18-25 years has touched 1.6 crore, stated officials of which 60,93,518 are male voters and 45,81,884 are female voters in this group while 611 are registered as third gender. With the ECI insisting on campaigns for voter registration especially youth by tying up with principals and asking students to fill up voters registration, has helped increased the number, stated officials. This is the updated voters list as per the figures registered till October 4.

The election department had also registered 5,560 migrant voters in the state of which male voters are 4,056 and 1,506 female voters as migrant voters. During the Lok Sabha polls the state voter registration had increased by 65 lakh and now another 30 lakh has been added in just six months, stated officials.

As many as 3,239 contestants will fight the assembly elections across Maharashtra on October 21 after 1,504 candidates withdrew their nominations on Monday, the last day for taking back applications. Meanwhile, in the state Pune district has the highest number of candidates at 246 while Sindhudurg has the least at 23. Chiplun assembly constituency in Ratnagiri district has the fewest candidates (3) in the fray followed by Mahim and Sewri in Mumbai with four each. Nanded South constituency has the highest number of candidates (38) followed by Aurangabad East and Beed (34 each) and Jalna (32).

As many as 4,743 candidates were in the electoral race ahead of the nomination withdrawal day. Bhokar in Nanded district, from where former chief minister Ashok Chavan is contesting, had 91 candidates in the fray but that number dropped dramatically to just 7 on Monday. Likewise, the number of nominations after scrutiny fell from 58 to 29 in the Pune Cantonment constituency.
