Malampuzha sees heavy rush of tourists

Palakkad: Malampuzha tourism centre has witnessed heavy rush of tourists during the Onam holidays with the dam full of water and its shutters remain opened.

The Malampuzha dam and garden registered an all-time visitor record of 32,000 tourists on Avittam day (Thursday), fetching a record collection of Rs 7.37 lakh as against the previous record of Rs 6.95 lakh and 30,000 visitors last year, said assistant executive engineer of Malampuzha irrigation project H Siddiq.



But on the Thiruvonam day (Wednesday), the ticket collection was only Rs 3.69 lakh due to heavy rain as against Rs 5.65 lakh and 20,000 visitors last year on this day, he said. On Chadayam day (Friday), the ticket collection was Rs 5.19 lakh and 25,000 people visited the centre as against Rs 3.82 lakh ticket collection and 20,000 visitors last year. On Uthradom day (Tuesday), the ticket collection was Rs 2.14 lakh and 17,000 visitors as against Rs 2.09 lakh ticket collection and 10,000 visitors, he said. There is heavy rush of people from different parts of the state and the neighbouring states, particularly Tamil Nadu, to Malampuzha.

Meanwhile, the five-day district Onam celebrations concluded in Palakkad on Saturday. Minister for water resources K Krishnankutty inaugurated the valedictory function at Rappadi open-air auditorium. The meeting was presided over by district panchayat president K Santhakumari.

The Onam celebrations started from September 10 had programmes to remember poet Rabindranath Tagore. A cultural team comprising 150 members from north eastern states had performed in three different stages.
