Malappuram: Probe ordered into sexual abuse, pregnancy of two minors

MALAPPURAM: Child welfare committee (CWC) in Malappuram has ordered the district child protection officer (DCPO) to conduct an inquiry on the report that two minor girls, belonging to Cholanaykar community in Nilambur , were sexually abused and impregnated.

The order was issued on Wednesday, based on the TOI report published on June 26, that the authorities have failed to shelter two pregnant Cholanaykar girls and to register a case regarding the incident.

In the order along with a copy of TOI report, the CWC has also asked the DCPO to seek a report regarding the incident from integrated tribal development office in Nilambur.

Chairman of CWC Malappuram, Shajesh Bhaskar said that the DCPO has been asked to submit a social investigation report (SIR) on the incident within two weeks. He has also informed that the child development project officer (CDPO) in Nilambur has also been asked to collect detailed information regarding the incident.

It was around two weeks ago that tribal welfare authorities and medical authorities confirmed the pregnancy of the two minor girls who belong to Cholanaykar community, one of the most primitive tribes living inside deep forests of Nilambur and the only remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in south India.
