Benjamin Mendy says Manchester City are still dreaming of Champions League glory this season.

City lead Real Madrid 2-1 after a stunning victory in the Bernabeu in the first leg of their last-16 tie, before the season was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Although UEFA have yet to confirm the resumption of the Champions League, it is hoped the competition can restart sometime in July or August.

Until then, City defender Mendy said he and his team-mates are left to hold on to their dream of delivering a first Champions League trophy for the Blues.

“We don’t have the Champions League yet so it is the dream,” said Mendy.

“We had a good game in Madrid and now we still have to play the second leg.

“I know that in the minds of every player they know that just because we won, that doesn't mean that it's finished or that we're qualified.

“It's not every day you go to somewhere like the Bernabeu and perform like that in the Champions League.

“We have an opportunity to go far in this cup and we want it, so everybody wakes up, works out, stays focused on the target for when they say we can come back.”

City's appeal against their two-year Champions League ban will be heard next month.

City were banned for two years from European competition from next season after UEFA found the club guilty of serious breaches of its financial fair play regulations.

Shortly after the ban was announced, City confirmed their intention to appeal the decision.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has set aside three days for the hearing, from June 8 through to June 10.

That means the Premier League’s Champions League chasing-sides are unlikely to know before the season resumes whether fifth place will be enough for a spot in Europe’s premier club competition next term.
