Man places meat in front of Coimbatore temples

COIMBATORE: Tension prevailed in Sullivan Street in Coimbatore after a man placed meat in front of Venugopala Krishnaswamy Temple and Sri Ragavendra Temple in the area.

More than 100 Hindu Munnani members gathered in front of Venugopala Krishnaswamy Temple, demanding action against the miscreant.

Police said an unidentified man placed a carry bag containing meat in front of the Sri Ragavendra Swamy Temple around 10.30am. He placed another carry bag containing meat in front of the main door of Venugopala Krishnaswamy Temple.

R Baby, 65, a flower seller, saw the man placing the carry bags at the temples. The man wore a mask. The flower seller thought the man had placed flowers at the temples.

"The smell of meat emanated from the Ragavendra Swamy Temple. I noticed meat in the carry bag. I removed the bag from there and informed temple authorities," said Baby.

Hindu Munnani functionary Guna told TOI that the unidentified man had placed meat in front the temples to create communal tension. “Police should take swift action against the miscreant,” he demanded.

Deputy commissioner of police (law and order) L Balaji Saravanan and other police officials visited the spot.
