Man poses as bank staffer, dupes senior citizen of Rs 1L

Pune: A man from Jamtara in Jharkhand duped a 63-year-old resident of Prabhat Road to the tune of Rs1 lakh.

The victim is a highly qualified man currently employed by a private company.

According to the complaint, the elderly man received a call at around 11.30am on Wednesday when he was home. The caller claimed to be employed with a bank where the victim holds an account.

The caller sought details of the complainant’s ATM card to verify his personal details.

Senior inspector Deepak Lagad said, “The elderly man passed on all the details pertaining to his ATM card.”

The caller informed him that he would update his record with the bank, Lagad added. “To update the records, the bank would send him a one-time password (OTP), which he was told to share,” he said.

The elderly man promptly shared the OTP. “The complainant then realized that a small amount had been transferred from his account,” Lagad said.

“When he told the caller that someone has just transferred money from his account, the caller asked him to be patient since the bank is doing some ‘tests’ to provide better e-banking,”he said.

The suspect repeated the process, convincing the complainant to share the OTP each time, and stole Rs1 lakh in all.
