Man, son touch grinder button, get electrocuted in Goregaon

MUMBAI: A 60-year-old man from Goregaon and his 24-year-old son were among three persons electrocuted on Friday, even as the city witnessed torrential rainfall. In Andheri , Kashima Udiyar (60) was electrocuted after she touched a parked bus which had a live wire running beneath it.

Rajendra Yadav and his son Sanjay touched the button of a grinder at their house when they suffered an electric shock.

Rajendra's wife and their younger son, who were injured, are presently stable. The Yadavs lived at Virvani Industrial Estate in Goregaon. Rajendra was a carpenter, while Sanjay was a civil contractor. Sanjay's wife, who is five months pregnant, had stepped out when the incident occurred.

Neighbours said Rajendra was alone in the ground floor of the house. Around 7.56am, he touched the button of a grinder to turn it on. When he got a shock, he cried out in pain, which alerted his wife and sons sleeping on the first floor. They rushed downstairs and Sanjay accidentally touched the grinder too. He was critically injured and mumbled incoherently. Rajendra's wife and younger son tried to revive him but Sanjay suffered injuries in the process. All four were rushed to Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Hospital, where Rajendra was pronounced dead on admission. Sanjay succumbed to injuries during treatment. "The chawl's electric meter is open and exposed to heavy rain," pointed out a resident, S Soni.

In the other case, Udiyar was walking home when she suffered an electric shock at Anna Nagar, near Andheri RTO, at 7.48am. Police said Udiyar touched a parked bus, beneath which a live wire was running. "We are gathering details of the incident before deciding whether to register an FIR," said Bharat Gaikwad, senior inspector, Amboli police.

Power firm officials said they take responsibility for only areas confined till the meter/junction box. Power firms will conduct a detailed inquiry into the electrocution deaths to ascertain what/who was responsible, an official added.
