Man waylaid at Cuncolim, four arrested

Margao: Vincent Pires, a 73-year-old businessman from Veroda, Cuncolim, was waylaid by six people late Monday night near the Cuncolim industrial estate and robbed of Rs 35,000.

Cuncolim police said Pires was travelling home on his two-wheeler when he was accosted by six motorcycle-borne accused near the Ambaulim-end of the Cuncolim industrial estate.



Police sources said the accused slapped Pires and assaulted him with a baton. They then snatched a bag containing Rs 35,000 that he had placed in the storage compartment of his scooter , and fled.

The police launched a manhunt for the accused and nabbed all the six culprits. Anil Itgekar, Sujit Kumar Roy and Mujib Pathan, all from Ambaulim, Quepem, and Jorge Pereira from Sao Jose de Areal, were arrested . The remaining two were remanded in a children’s protective home as they were minors, police sources said.

Cuncolim police have booked the accused under Section 395 (dacoity) of the Indian Penal Code. Investigations are under way.
