Manipal professor all set for second cycling expedition in Malaysia

MANGALURU: SSS Shameem , assistant professor, department of computer engineering and sciences, School of Science and Engineering , Manipal International University (MIU), Nilai in Malaysia launched his second cycling expedition at Nilai on Saturday. This is Shameem’s second 15 day solo cycling expedition in Malaysia.

After the successful Malaysia cycling campaign conducted last year he raised 2,000 USD for Rotary’s EndPolio project , this year, through Rotary Kasih Manipal cycling campaign, he hopes to cover 2,000 kms in 14 days and raise funds for underprivileged kids.


Shameem told TOI, “This is a fund raising cycling expedition aimed at covering peninsular Malaysia. Rotary International Clubs from Malaysia (3300/3310) from and India (3182) will support this expedition. Rotary Kasih Project : A student life transformation programme hopes to raise funds for underprivileged kids. The aim is to connect the community and the nation going with Rotary’s theme for this year-‘Rotary connects with the world.”

Shameem is a recreational cyclist and an endurance athlete. During the Operation Polio Eradication expedition in Feb 2018, he covered 2,200 kms in 15 days. A post graduate in Computer Science from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal he has been associated with Manipal Group from 2008. Since 2011, he worked as an assistant professor at MIT, Manipal and is currently at MIU, Malaysia. For years, he has been dedicating his vacation on cyclingexpeditions.

Some of his solo cycling expeditions in India include Bengaluru- Koraput (1500 Km) in 8.5 days (Dec-2015),Kanyakumari- Kashmir (3500 Kms) in 23 days (May-2016), Manipal -Jaipur (2500 kms) 20 days (Dec-2016) and (Group Cycling expedition) Okha -Dibrugarh (3500 Kms) 19 days (May-2017). As an endurance runner he has completed over 20 half and five full marathons in India. As part of Manipal University Campus Connect “Tour-de-Manipal” (Teamcycling event) he led a team of students from Manipal to Jaipur covering 2,500 km in 20 days during in 2016.
