Man's death in accident triggers violence

Varanasi: A mob indulged in violence and brick-batting after a man died in an SUV-motorcycle collision in Takha village of Jaunpur on Sunday.

Police had to use force to disperse the unruly mob which assaulted the SUV driver and damaged vehicles.

Circle officer, Shahganj, Ajay Srivastava said a case had been registered and efforts were on to identify the people who indulged in violence.



According to police, Dilip Yadav (30) of Madwa village was going on a motorcycle when it collided with an SUV. Dilip died on the spot while local residents caught the SUV driver.

In the meantime, some mischievous elements spread the rumour that Dilip’s daughter was also with him on the motorcycle and she was missing. Misled by the rumour, agitated locals thrashed the SUV driver and damaged his vehicle.

When cops reached the spot and tried to rescue the driver, the protesters indulged in brick-batting targeting vehicles. Police used force to control the agitation.

The circle officer said the SUV driver was taken to police station where an FIR was lodged against him. “Dilip daughter was found at home. Another FIR has been lodged against those indulged in violence during the protest,” he added.

In a separate incident, Awadhesh Yadav (50) of Mubarakpur area of Mau died after his motorcycle was hit by some unidentified vehicle on Mau-Ballia highway.
