Mapusa civic body to enforce plastic ban

Saligao: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to enforce a ban on the use of plastic in the town next week.

At a meeting held on Wednesday that was called following the letter by the directorate of municipal administration to hold a discussion on implementing the plastic ban, councillors said there should be a total ban on plastic in the vegetable and fruit markets.

They also said the municipality should provide rexine bags for vendors as an alternative.

Councillor Tushar Tople said people should be given an option of either using cloth or rexine bags.

After listening to the councillors’ suggestions, MMC chairperson Ryan Braganza resolved to implement the ban permanently. “We will see what the response to this decision is and will work towards making it a success,” Braganza said, adding that the fine amount for flouting the plastic ban is yet to be decided.

Last year, the municipality had implemented a similar ban from October 2.
