Margao civic body tells hospitals, hotels to segregate waste

MARGAO: Chairperson of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), Babita Angle Prabhudessai, on Tuesday held separate meetings with medical practitioners, hospital owners, and hotel and restaurant owners in the town over the issue of collection of segregated waste at source.

Both these categories of waste generators were told that only segregated waste will be collected by the municipal workers from their units.

The medical units were asked to cooperate with the municipality in working out a plan for safe and scientific disposal of biomedical waste.

The hotel and restaurant owners were warned of strict action, including disconnection of their water supply, if they failed to take sewerage connection to their units.

MMC chief officer Siddhivinayak Naik, who was also present at the meeting, later told TOI that he had already written to the public works department (PWD) for disconnection of water supply to a hotel in the commercial capital for failing to get connected to the sewerage network.

Naik said a meeting with the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and Goa Solid Waste Management Agency (GSWMA) will be held within the next 3-4 days to discuss further course of action.

The chief officer also said that the modalities for covering the Sonsoddo garbage dump by the GSWMA are nearing completion and that a work order for the task could be issued soon after the model code of conduct ends on Thursday.
