Margao council chief elections on November 22

Margao: The meeting to elect the new chairperson of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) will be held on November 22.

However, the situation in the ruling group and the opposition continues to be volatile as attempts are under way in both camps to bolster their numerical strength ahead of the polls.

Initially a group of 14 councillors belonging to both the opposition sections – the BJP and the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat camp – had joined hands over the Jack de Sequeira issue which later led to the resignation of Babita Angle Prabhudessai from chairperson’s post.

However, sources said that two of them have already exited the group. While one has already moved over to the ruling group affiliated to Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, the other hasn’t made known her inclination yet – whether she would join the ruling group or abstain from voting at the elections.

The BJP camp has claimed that despite losing two members, its strength is intact and that it will be known on the day of the elections, indicating that it banks on cross voting to have a smooth sailing in the polls.

The saffron camp has also made it clear that it will not field its candidate and will rather support “any candidate who will assure us that all statutory process will be followed while erecting the Jack de Sequeira statue.” Significantly, sources said that Margao MLA Digambar Kamat is yet to make any moves for nominating his candidate to contest the polls. On the other hand, Sardesai has already announced the candidature of Pooja Naik from the ruling group, as a ‘bahujan samaj’ candidate.
