Margao hawkers fined for flouting waste rules

Margao: After cracking the whip against hotels and restaurants for not providing segregated waste to the municipality’s waste collectors, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has now brought street hawkers under its radar.

Late Monday evening, the MMC cracked down on 26 street hawkers and restaurants from different parts of the city, and issued them challans under the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage Control Act 1996 and rules framed thereunder.

The team was led by MMC chief officer Siddhivinayak Naik.

“All of them were issued challans for first-time offences,” Naik said.

MMC’s drive of collecting only segregated waste from residential and commercial premises, Naik claimed, has resulted in considerable increase in the quantum of segregated waste landing at Sonsoddo garbage treatment plant.

Last week, MMC had fined several commercial establishments, hotels and restaurants as well as housing societies. They were fined Rs 2,000 for the first offence and Rs 5,000 for the second. Naik said the rules provide for a fine up to Rs 25,000 for subsequent offences.
