Margao team inspects preparation work for rains

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is racing against time to complete all pre-monsoon works in the city.

On Wednesday, chief officer of the MMC, Siddhivinayak Naik, along with personnel from the council’s technical section and representatives of the directorate of health services and South Goa planning and development authority (SGPDA) conducted an inspection of all areas which are known to be vulnerable to flooding.

Naik told reporters that the inspection was conducted to help draw up an action plan for rejuvenation of the polluted stretch of River Sal.

“We inspected all the major nallahs which serve as tributaries to River Sal in the municipal jurisdiction. We identified cluster of houses and business establishments which release waste water in these nallahs. Many of these nallahs are maintained by water resources department and are not yet desilted,” Naik said.

MMC as well as the health department will soon issue notices to all those releasing waste water into the nallahs, asking them to take corrective action, failing which, essential services such as water supply would be disconnected, Naik said.

Meanwhile, MMC has engaged its workers to ensure that all the drains that have been cleaned and unclogged are maintained until the onset of monsoons. However, with several hotels in the city discharging waste into open drains, MMC officials are worried that the situation could lead to repeated clogging of drains.

While MMC has claimed to have desilted all drains, the water resources department (WRD) is likely to take up the task of cleaning of the nallahs soon. As is the practice, the WRD floats tenders for desilting of the 10-12 big nallahs in the city.

The pre-monsoon works of the MMC includes cleaning drains and gutters, desilting nullahs, cutting and trimming tree branches, identifying low lying areas prone to flooding and clearing illegal hutments, preparing a plan for accommodating people affected by monsoon calamity, among others.
