Margao: Village road safety panels to get boost

MARGAO: Goacan, a consumer network organisation, will be holding various programmes towards road safety management in coordination with the traffic cell of the state police and the RTO. Ahead of the fifth Global Road Safety Week , Goacan held a meeting with senior police officials at South Goa district police headquarters in Margao on Friday.

Goacan convener Roland Martins told reporters on Friday that the organisation has decided to activate all the road safety and traffic management committees of village panchayats after training them. This exercise, he said, will be undertaken between May 15 and August 15.

“Equipping the road engineering cells of the PWD with vehicles was also discussed and Goacan will soon be writing to the district collectors in that regard,” Martins said.

Goacan will also be conducting mass outreach programmes for awareness for road and safety patrol scheme for students and recruitment of traffic wardens.

The organisation has also urged the police to release data of traffic accidents every quarter so that causes of accidents are properly analysed and action taken to prevent them.
