Marxist intellectual applies his Midas touch

TM Thomas Isaac, 71, has a unique way of dealing with a situation. With his Isaac touch, he makes everything informal and ensures nothing goes as per script. No different is the two-time finance minister’s campaign tours.

After lunch and a short nap at a traditional communist family at Thottikkal in Nedumkunnam panchayat in Kottayam district, the CPM central committee member visited St Teresa’s convent, Sanjeevani autism centre and Mother Teresa old age home in the area before moving to Parakkal where the residents waited in scorching heat.
“Here comes the leader who took women to the mainstream.

Kudumbashree was his idea,” a CPM functionary announced. Isaac never fails to listen to the grievances of MGNREGA and Asha workers. Isaac got out of the car and became one among the crowd, smiling and cracking jokes. Mariamma Moses, 78, a resident, presented him sweets. “Did you get your pension?” he asked her. He called a second-year Zoology student from the crowd and enquired about her studies. He promised to help her in his MP capacity when she finishes degree.

“An MP must do things like this and not just high-mast lights,” Isaac said in a lighter vein. At Manthuruthy, the scheduled speech was cancelled after the body of a 39-year-old autorickshaw driver was brought to the stand. Isaac paid homage to him inside the ambulance before proceeding to Twelfth Mile. He distributed a bunch of plantains presented by a party worker among the gathering. “I’ve the support of all seven MLAs in the constituency. We are Team Pathanamthitta,” he said. Isaac ensures he meets the booth president and the secretary in each area.

He calls them by names and asks them to come out of the crowd. He shakes hands with them and passes directions. Isaac also asks all to use the contacts in their mobile phones to seek votes for him. At Nilampodinja, one Kudumbashree worker makes him stand in front of a flex board of Isaac for a photograph. Its caption read: ‘Time for change’. It’s the message he wants to convey
