Mathura on alert as Yamuna hovers near danger mark

Agra: A flood alert was issued in Mathura district on Thursday as water level in Yamuna hovered close to the danger mark and authorities setting up flood outposts. Boats were also put on standby to deal with any eventuality.

According to the officials, the situation is being continuously monitored and people staying in low-lying areas have been asked to stay cautious.

“While 31 flood outposts have been set up with 150 private boats on the standby, two PAC flood companies have also been called,” district magistrate Sarvagya Ram Misra said. He added that at present, the river was flowing about 70cm below the danger mark which is 166 meters.

The administration has started ‘munadi’ (public announcemewnt) in low-lying areas to alert the people. He claimed that all the necessary arrangements have been made to tackle the situation. “Yamuna is expected to touch the danger mark by Friday morning.”

Additional district Magistrate (Finance) Brijesh Kumar said that there are few villages in Maant, Chhatta, Sadar and Mahavan where water would enter if the river crosses its danger mark. However, the administration is fully prepared for to deal with the situation. He added that so far, only a few fields have been affected by the river water.

He said, “As many as 24 personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in Maant where there are high chances of flooding.”
