Kozhikode: The construction work of the proposed government medical college in Wayanad will begin in December and the first batch of students will be admitted in 2021, health minister K K Shailaja said.

After visiting the 50-acres identified at Chelod Estate near Vythiri for the medical college, she said that the land acquisition would be completed by mid-November.

The state government has already given administrative sanction for the project estimated at Rs 615 crore and funds will be made available through KIIFB after the DPR is approved.

She said that the medical college buildings will be constructed in an eco-friendly manner.

The study report by Geological Survey of India (GSI) was positive about setting up of the medical college in the estate land. The preliminary social impact report at the newly identified location is also positive, she added.

The minister said that as the land is situated along the highway, people will have ease of access to reach the proposed medical college.

Shailaja said that the government will retain the land earlier identified at Madakkimala for the project and the land will be used to set up allied buildings of the proposed medical college, if found suitable.

Kalpetta MLA, C K Saseendran, Vythiri grama panchayat president V Usha Kumari and district medical officer R Renuka were among those who accompanied the minister.

During the previous UDF government, the foundation stone for the medical college was laid at the 50-acre given free to the government by Chandraprabha Trust at Madakkimala in 2015. But the project hit a hurdle after GSI said following last year’s floods that construction activity cannot be carried out in the land.
