Medical negligence? After doctor, pregnant woman wrongly tested COVID-19 positive in Karnataka

Chikkamangaluru: In a shocking incidence of medical negligence, a pregnant woman in Karnataka was wrongly tested COVID-19 positive and then hospitalised after faulty laboratory analysis. This is the second such case after a medical officer was wrongly tested positive.

The fresh incident has been reported from Tarikere area of Chikkamagaluru district.

The woman was later tested negative when her test was done in another lab.

According to a report in Times of India, the pregnant woman had to remain hospitalised for eight days due to the faulty COVID-19 test. Earlier, a medical officer was forced to stay in the hospital for four days after he was also wrongly tested coronavirus positive.

On May 20, the samples of both the persons were tested at Nimhans Bengaluru which confirmed the two had COVID-19.

However, when the samples of their contacts were found negative, officials tested their samples in TB machine, truent which confirmed they don't have coronavirus infection.

Later, their samples were also sent to Shivamogga, Hassan and NIV Bengaluru for further testing. Both the man and the woman were again tested negative.

The samples of these two persons were collected during random testing. Neither of them had any travel history.

After the discharge of these two individuals, the number of active cases has come down to 14 from earlier 16 in Chikkamangaluru.

Meanwhile, Chikkamangaluru deputy commissioner has said the two samples were tested positive due to some technical errors.

"The woman is free to go to her home after she tested negative for COVID-19. Her locality is no longer considered a containment zone," said Bagadi Goutham, DC Chikkamangaluru.

After the woman was wrongly tested 'positive', the authorities sealed her locality and the health department officials also quarantined 10 of her relatives. Goutham refused to share further details about the two cases.
