Medical students want online classes to start

BHUBANESWAR: The students’ wing of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) here has demanded commencement of online classes for MBBS and MS courses and cancellation of all professional examinations in the medical colleges owing to the difficulties undergraduate medical students are facing.

In a letter to governor Ganeshi Lal, the medical students stated that courses were running late due to the lockdown and the closure of medical colleges and it would be hard for them to appear for the examinations scheduled around July-August.

“It has been months since the students last attended their classes. With the MBBS curriculum running late by at least six months, we are currently facing a syllabus lag of at least two and a half months,” Lohit Anwesh Sahoo, general secretary of Indian Medical Association Medical Students Network, said.

He said several other institutions had started online classes via different platforms.

“We are being considered forerunners of the most essential fraternity in these testing times and we don’t want to lag behind on the path of our own progress,” Sahoo said.

The students’ wing said it had been over two months since they had got any information regarding exams. Following the abrupt announcement of the lockdown, students had vacated their hostels with minimal books, which has ultimately hurt their ability to prepare for exams at home, they stated.

“The 15 per cent students who enrolled through all-India quota are facing the uncertainty of transportation. Moreover, the government guideline of mandatory quarantine for outsiders will make it difficult for them to prepare for exams,” the students said.

Considering the difficulties, the medical students demanded cancellation of all UG examinations for the 2020-21 academic year.
