Meet CISF Jawan Biraj Hazarika, Who Set Up Assam's First-Ever Food, Clothes Bank From His Own Savings
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is an integral part of our country's paramilitary forces. Every now and then, CISF personnel put the country first than themselves. In yet another instance of putting others before them, a 32-year-old CISF jawan from Assam, Biraj Hazarika, has decided to set up the north-eastern state's first-ever food and clothes bank using his own hard-earned money in Sivasagar district, a report in the Times of India stated.
Biraj Hazarika is currently employed by ONGC in the district. He is planning to launch the bank in the heart of Nazira town on Sunday.
Biraj hails from Dalgaon in Darrang district and he has been donating food and clothes to the needy people at all places he has served so far.
"I started donating food to people living on the streets when I was posted at The Taj Mahal in Agra. It slowly became a part of my daily routine in all the places I had served", he was quoted to as saying by TOI.
"I donated food and clothes to the poor in Kishtwar district of Jammu & Kashmir when I was posted in the 7th Reserve Battalion. I was loved much by the poor people for this reason," said Hazarika as quoted to as saying by TOI.
Biraj had joined the CISF in 2010.
Incidentally, Agra was Hazarika's first place of posting. The CISF jawan had come back to Assam in March, 2018.
Called "Roti aaru Kapur (clothes) Bank" with the punch line "Gareeb ka Dost" (friend of the poor), the place will have non-perishable food items like rice, lentils, oil, salt, sugar and clothes.
Not only this bank, Biraj is planning to open a second bank which might come up in Jorhat.

The proposed bank will have a permanent office in Nazira and a vehicle will travel to all the nearby villages frequently to donate items to the needy people.
"As of now, I will buy the items as much as possible from my salary. I have been contacted by many people who are willing to donate. I hope more people will come forward to help once the bank becomes operational," added Hazarika, as quoted to as saying by TOI. He said this bank can be a one-stop destination for dropping food and clothes, especially during floods.
Biraj doesn't want to stop at these two districts and has sights on opening such banks in every district of Assam.
Given the lack of such people who exist, Biraj's endeavours come as a welcome change and shows the world that we need more such people around.
