Mega plantation drives across the city

As the country celebrated Van Mahotsav in the first week of July, residents in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar celebrated it for an entire month. They were committed to planting as many saplings as possible. The tropical cyclone Fani that hit the Odisha coast in May destroyed a lot of trees and thousands of plants were removed from the city landscape affecting its green cover.

Since then, many organisations and individuals have come up with various plans to carry on plantation drives. All this is done to bring back the greenery in the city. Several actors such as Sabyasachi Mishra and Anu Choudhury were seen taking up the plantation activity with the help of several organisations.

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) also conducted plantation drives in several city parks. The parks that are mostly managed and maintained by these two organisations bore the brunt of the cyclone. The green patches all over the city have dwindled. The drive is to make the parks look green again and provide that soothing effect of nature to the local people.

East Coast Railway also took up plantation drive within the premises. Principals, heads of departments and senior railway officials, including the members of East Coast Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation, took part in the plantation work. It aimed at beautifying and recreating the green cover of the area.

Similarly, a mega plantation drive with the slogan Go Green: Greater Involvement was organised inside KIIT and KISS premises, where more than 10,000 employees of the university took part and planted various saplings. Many organisations that are working for the environment also took part in the plantation drive to celebrate the Van Mahotsav and help Bhubaneswar get back its green cover. “It’s our duty to plant as many trees and save our environment,” said Anu.
