Meghalaya IAS officer is setting example for plastic-free sustainable life
Shillong| Ram Singh, an IAS officer posted in the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya, is becoming quite viral on social media these days.
Prime Minister Modi during his Independence Day speech asked people to shun the single-use plastic. But this IAS officer is setting an example for plastic-free life. The Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills does not even use plastic bags for shopping. Ram Singh hangs a basket made of bamboo on his back to take the goods. Such baskets are commonly used by the tribal community.
Recently Ram Singh posted a photo story of a walk on his Facebook and Instagram account. In it, he wrote, “Shopping for 21 kg of organic vegetables. Without plastic, without pollution and without traffic jam. Morning Walk … Fit India, Fit Meghalaya, No to Plastic.”
Speaking to a local website, Ram Singh said that many people have complained to him that it is very difficult to carry vegetables due to this reason. According to the officer, “I advised him to take a bamboo basket (which the locals call Kokcheng) with him. Some people laughed at the idea. So I started walking on the road with my wife carrying a kokcheng. ”
There are many such pictures in Ram Singh’s social media accounts, in which he is seen roaming in the rugged areas of the city. Ram Singh is originally from Himachal Pradesh. He was posted on 1 December 2017 in West Garo Hills. Since then, they have been promoting various social functions in the city.
