Mentally challenged woman gang-raped by five unidentified men in Assam's Nagaon

Guwahati: In a shocking turn of events, a mentally challenged woman was allegedly gang-raped by five youths at the Kachua village in Nagaon district of central Assam on Sunday night. The matter came to light the next day when the woman returned home and narrated her ordeal before her family who decided to lodge an official police complaint in this regard.

An official familiar with the matter told media personnel that the woman went for a bicycle ride on Sunday evening and did not return home until late. This prompted her family members to alert police officials and locals about her disappearance. Despite their efforts, the woman could not be traced on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

The woman returned home on Monday morning and told her parents that she had been repeatedly gang-raped the previous night by five unidentified men, reported Times of India. A police complaint was then registered in this regard prompting officials to visit the spot where the woman claimed to have been held by the accused. Undergarments have been collected and sent for forensic examination from the spot which is nearly 12 kms from the girl's residence.

A police official also told the national daily that the woman is undergoing treatment at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health in Tezpur. Her medical tests have been conducted and the reports are still awaited. However, no arrests have been made in this regard as of yet since the woman was unable to recognise any of the accused men.
