MES to roll out new schools, hostels & skill-based courses in 160th year

PUNE: The Maharashtra Education Society (MES) will expand its current infrastructure facilities at the Abasaheb Garware College, build a students' hostel, set up new primary and secondary schools and introduce skill-based courses in its 160th year, starting from Tuesday.

The society was instituted in 1860 and will have a yearlong celebration to commemorate its160th year.

Brain-child of three veteran reformists — Vasudev Balwant Phadke, Waman Prabhakar Bhave and Lakshman Narhar Indapurkar — the society was been envisioned as an ambitious programme for bringing about youth reforms.

Today, MES is home to over 75 institutions and more than 40,000 students. Moreover, around 2,000 teachers and administrative staff are part of the society.

Rajiv Sahasrabudhe, chairman of the governing body of MES, said, "The society has made its presence felt right from the kindergarten schools to post-graduation and research institutes. Students across the Pune city, Saswad, Kasar-Amboli, Baramati, Panvel, Belapur, Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai, Shirval in Satara, Ahmednagar and Chiplun in Ratnagiri are benefitting from our efforts."

Sahasrabudhe said, "In the coming years, we have plans of enhancing the current infrastructure and to start new schools. We also plan to introduce new skillbased learning courses with a focus on self-employability."

MES had set up “Deendayal Upadhyaya Kaushal Kendra” in 2015 at Abasaheb Garware College to impart skillbased education. The intention was to promote entrepreneurship and self-employability.

Apart from the traditional courses in arts, science and commerce, the society also has established a military school for girls, a hospital and research centre, Ayurveda college and a nursing college in Ghanekhunt, Ratnagiri.

It had also set up a shooting range on the premises of Renuka Swaroop Memorial Girls' High School, Kreedavardhini, a personality development centre, institute for career courses, and various hostels.
