Military train's wagons derail twice in a day

Nagpur: Two derailments involving loaded wagons of a military special goods train within a span of a few hours at Kamptee yard on Wednesday have raised safety concerns. Though railway traffic was not affected, the derailments have triggered speculations.

According to sources, two wagons — 6th and 7th from the engine — had derailed at Kamptee yard at 12.40am while shunting on Wednesday.

Following the incident, breakdown vehicle was requisitioned from Motibagh yard which re-railed the wagons by 6am.

The train, which was bound for Balasore, had started to roll for shunting once again later in the evening when 10th wagon from the engine got derailed. Rear wheels of the wagon had got derailed in the second incident. Breakdown vehicle from Motibagh had to be summoned for the second time, which took an hour for re-railing the wagon.

Senior officials of South Eastern Central Railway (SECR) had rushed to Kamptee yard on both the occasions for inspection. However, it’s still not clear whether it was manual error or technical issue that led to the derailments. SECR Railway Protection Force (RPF) too had reached the spot for providing security assistance and ascertain whether there was any security-related emergency or casualty.

According to a senior SECR official, the wagons which had got derailed were marked ‘sick’ before being sent for inspection at wagon repair shop (mechanical) at Raipur. “We are now trying to ascertain what caused the derailments,” he said.
