Minimal rain for three days, but Vasai-Virar still waterlogged

MUMBAI: Despite the fact that the Vasai-Virar region received negligible rainfall in the last two to three days, several residential areas and ground floor houses remain waterlogged there.

The region saw heavy rainfall for four consecutive days—till around 7am on July 2. Civic officials said in some areas, the total rainfall in those four days was over 997mm.

On Tuesday, a large pump was transported by train from the city to Nalasopara to drain the water that had the submerged railway tracks. However, rainwater is still to recede from several other areas in Vasai-Virar region.

Several housing societies in the C and H Colonies in Vasai (west) had rainwater in ground floor apartments and building compounds. Till Thursday, water had not receded from the ground floor flats of Krushna Township in Vasai too. Roads that led to housing societies in both Nalasopara east and west were also waterlogged. Locals said that since July 2, there has been very little rainfall.

The Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) had placed 16 mobile pumps to drain excess rainwater. However, residents said that they had to hire pumps from private firms to flush out the water, and these were not easily available. Civic officials said that efforts were on to drain the water out from roads and residential areas.

During last monsoon , more than 14,000 families were affected by the flooding in the region. A study had revealed that the reasons behind the flooding were narrowing of natural water sources, poor desilting of nullahs, and obstruction of water flow by mangroves growing in the nullahs. This year, the municipality has claimed that all major nullahs were cleaned before the rains hit.
