Miracle at the 'House of the Bomb'

SRIGANGANAGAR: Located on the inter-state borders of Rajasthan and Punjab, the most famous address of Kallar Khera village is called the ‘House of the Bomb’.

Its occupant, Harnek Singh, can’t thank his stars enough. “It was March 10. At 8pm, a smouldering bomb like object tore through the roof and landed on the trunk beneath,” he says.

The entire family rushed out as smoke filled the room.

Villagers from Abohar in Punjab and Sriganganagar have been visiting his house in large numbers to witness the ‘miracle’. The next day, Army officials inspected the house before taking away the shell.

Harnek’s neighbour Kulwinder Singh told TOI that the entire neighbourhood shivered at the sound of the loud explosion, which left the walls cracked.

Similar scenes were witnessed at 3B village of Sriganganagar at the house of Veram Singh. A burning shell tore through the roof and crashed into the floor by the bed.

The small pile of rubble still remains inside the house. “For the past many days, our house is teeming with people coming from all places to check if it’s true or not,” says Simarjeet. The officials came the next day to her house and said it was a live shell that luckily had not exploded.

“Our family can barely go to the market because of visitors. They want to know how someone had survived after bombs hitting their house,” she says.

Authorities took the live shell out and defused it. But a strange eeriness continues to stalk the family. “It was nothing short of a miracle. The room which was hit is the study room for kids. They usually spend a lot of time preparing for exams. Luckily, no one was there,” she says, adding that they organised a religious prayer meeting before using the room again.

Villagers suspect that these must have been shells fired at Pakistani drones that flew over the border villages of Sriganganagar.
