Mizoram: Drivers to be tested for Covid

AIZAWL: Alarmed by 43 drivers and handymen testing postive for Covid-19 in Kolasib, district magistrate Dr H Lalthlangliana on Monday ordered that all the passengers, drivers and handymen would have to undergo rapid antigen tests before reaching the police check gate at Vairengte.

Lalthlangliana said that anyone found to be Covid-positive would be admitted at the Covid care centre in Vairengte town while those found to be negative would be quarantined for 14 days.

A meeting of health department and home department officials chaired by health minister Dr R Lalthangliana decided to lay down standard operating procedures (SOP) for those waiting for the results of swab sample tests.

Two villages near Aizawl and seven localities in the city imposed a total lockdown after a doctor, who was the member of a team collecting swab samples, tested Covid-positive on Sunday.

It was decided in the meeting that 10,000 rapid antigen test kits would be procured immediately and the medical team at Vairengte town would be strengthened by deploying more medical workers. Students and the general public will not be invited to attend the Independence Day celebrations on Saturday next while the march past stands cancelled.

Meanwhile, in view of the pandemic situation, Mizoram University deferred the undergraduate and postgraduate examinations scheduled to commence from Monday. Student bodies, the state government and the principal council of colleges had appealed to the university authorities to postpone the examinations.

Congress and BJP on Monday demanded that elections to 558 village councils (2,464 members) in nine districts scheduled to be held on August 27 be postponed in view of rising number of cases.
