Mohali: Day before marriage, driver killed in accident

MOHALI: A 30-year-old man died in an accident a day before he was to get married at Chatt village in Zirakpur on Tuesday late night.

Gurtej Singh, a resident of Chatt, used to work as a driver for a private company in Zirakpur. He and his two friends Manjit Singh and Parveen Kumar were going back to his place around 12.30am.

Manjit was driving the Maruti Alto car. As he was about to take a turn near the Chattbir zoo, a speeding truck coming from the opposite side rammed into the vehicle.

Gurtej received severe head injuries. He was taken to his house and then to a private hospital in Zirakpur, where doctors declared him brought dead. His marriage was fixed for Wednesday and the procession was to be taken to Devi Nagar village in Rajpura. He is survived by his two elder siblings, one elder sister, and an elder brother.

"The post-mortem examination was conducted. The family has conducted the last rites," police said. Manjit is admitted to PGI, Chandigarh, while Parveen is at Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh. Their condition is critical, police said. A case under relevant sections of the IPC was filed at the Zirakpur police station. TNN
