Monsoon extended in Madhya Pradesh; winter could set in by October-end

Bhopal: With conditions continuing to remain largely wet a week into October, monsoon is likely to extend five more days beyond the date forecast by the met department. Earlier, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted monsoon withdrawal from October 10.

With monsoon now expected to withdraw from the state on October 15, temperatures may soon start going down — to around 15 degree Celsius by month-end — SK Mishra, senior scientist at the city office of IMD said.

Change in wind directions and absence of moisture will add to chill in the atmosphere, he added.

Meanwhile, on Monday, heavy spell of thundershowers lashed the city in the afternoon hours after a hot and humid first half. The city recorded 2mm of rain, weather office said. On Monday, Bhopal recorded a maximum temperature of 30 degree Celsius and a minimum temperature of 22.5 degree Celsius, which was 3 degrees above normal.

In the rest of the state, Betul was the coldest place on Monday at 16 degree Celsius, while Narsinghpur was the hottest where mercury was recorded at 35 degree Celsius. Weather office said that minimum temperatures were more than the normal in the districts of Bhopal, Sagar, Shahdol and Chambal divisions on Monday.

Officials added that there was a lot of moisture in atmosphere and thundershower activities have been taking place in large parts of Madhya Pradesh.

As the thundershowers are taking place, the wind directions were changing continuously during the day, weather office said. “In the morning, when the weather is pleasant, the winds are northerly. It then changes to easterly in the afternoon,” officials added.

Now there are strong signs of monsoon withdrawal and as soon as it happens, the wind direction would be norther-easterly, which would bring a nip in the air. As it continues to rain regularly in the transition period of monsoon to winter, the arrival of winter has delayed a little, the met department said.
