Monsoon Remains Active over Kerala; Thunderstorms Likely Till Friday

Even as the withdrawal of southwest monsoon continues across south-central India, isolated thunderstorms have prevailed in many parts of Kerala. Heavy rains lashed Kochi on Monday as the city witnessed a 24-hour rainfall accumulation of 76 mm till Tuesday morning. Maximum rainfall of 92 mm was recorded at Chittur in Palakkad district.

The rainfall has, however, not been up to the mark for the coastal state. Kerala has witnessed over 20% rainfall deficit in the post-monsoon so far since October 1. During the monsoon season from June to September, Kerala received a total of 2310 mm rainfall—13% more than normal for the season.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts rain or thunderstorms at most places across Kerala. Regional met centre forecast suggests generally cloudy skies with a few spells of rain or thunderstorm in both Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. A yellow watch has been issued to Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Malappuram to be updated. Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely in these districts during this week.
