MP: Highway thieves try to steal goods from moving truck in Ujjain, video goes viral

INDORE: A shocking video of two youths jumping on to a moving truck from a motorcycle, slashing open the tarpaulin to steal goods and jumping off the vehicle when the driver jerked to a stop in Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh , has gone viral on social media.

The video, shot by a biker following the truck in broad daylight, shows two thieves scaling the moving truck and attempting to cut open the tarpaulin covering the goods, even as regular traffic moves by on Barnagar road – a move called ‘truck cutting’ by locals.

Apparently, one of the car drivers alerted the trucker, prompting him to stop the vehicle. The youths swung down the ropes holding the tarpaulin and fled the spot on a motorcycle ridden by their accomplice in close vicinity.

Transport company manager Devendra Neema told reporters that the truck was carrying a load of sarees from Surat to Ujjain. “We have suffered heavy losses due to the highway robbers who commit the crime on moving vehicles. Once they cut the tarpaulin, they throw the goods on the roadside, which are collected by their accomplices,” he said.

Soon after the incident, the truck driver, with his company manager, attempted to lodge a complaint with the Mahakal police, but the case was not entertained, they alleged.

Ujjain Transport Association president Saurabh Jain said such incidents are reported often on roads around Ujjain. “The police don’t entertain such complaints quoting jurisdiction issues,” he said.

Ujjain superintendent of police Sachin Atulkar said, “We have received such complaints.., in most of the cases the incidents take place in the night and the complainants are not sure about where it took place.”

He said sometimes the drivers also cook up stories.

Atulkar said the police will verify the video that has been making rounds and on receipt of formal complaint, take action immediately against the accused.
