Mumbai: Afcons Infrastructure's official surrenders following SC's order

NAGPUR: Following Supreme Court’s order, project officer of Mumbai-based Afcons Infrastructure Anil Kumar Bachu Singh surrendered before Selu police in the case of illegal excavation of murrum and destruction of land owned by Hyderabad-based Cozy Properties Pvt Ltd.

The company allegedly carried out illegal excavation on the land for construction of Samruddhi Mahamarg.

Singh was remanded in magisterial custody till November 29.

Selu PI Sunil Gade told TOI that Singh was produced before Wardha district and sessions courts on Friday. “He surrendered on November 13. Court had given police custody till Friday,” he said.

On the complaint of Cozy Properties, Selu police had registered an offence against Singh and Ashish Daftari, owner of MP Constructions that is a petty contractor of Afcons, under sections 379, 447, 427, 120-B and 34 of IPC (trespass, theft, conspiracy and common intention) on August 22. Singh and Daftari had filed anticipatory bail before district and sessions court but it was refused.

Singh then sought anticipatory bail from high court which too rejected the plea. He then moved Apex Court which directed Singh to appear before Selu police and cooperate in the case. Selu police are yet to arrest Daftari. Gade said Daftari was absconding and a search for him was underway.

Cozy Properties in its complaint had alleged a loss of around Rs100 crore. Afcons and its petty contractors had also excavated land owned by a few farmers, zudpi jungle and hillock owned by the state government. Though it has started an investigation, Wardha district administration is yet to take any action on Afcons and the contractors. It has not even registered a complaint with police despite government having banned excavation of murrum from its land.

Project’s nodal agency MSRDC had appointed Afcons for constructing 59km stretch of Samruddhi Mahamarg in Wardha district.
