Mumbai: Rustle up street designs for BMC, take home Rs 5 lakh

MUMBAI: Here’s your chance to trot out designs for your city’s streets and footpaths. And if your design is judged the winning one, you could pocket the prize money of Rs 5 lakh.

The BMC has, for the first time, announced a competition titled ‘Mumbai Street Lab’, inviting urban designers and architects to come up with innovative, creative street design solutions.

The civic body has cherry-picked stretches of five streets across the city to implement practical designs.

So, this would include offering a plan to lay out potted plants, walking or cycling paths, spots for public transport amenities like bus stops and such amenities. The design has to be based on scientific assessment of needs of that area and should also factor in behaviour of street users. Also, it should improve designs at road intersections and improve efficiency of vehicular movement.

Additional municipal commissioner Vijay Singhal said that the idea behind the competition is to harness the potential of our city’s urban designers. The civic body has partnered with World Resources Institute. “We look forward to interesting ideas which the BMC will implement in coordination with the traffic police and under the supervision of winning teams,” said Singhal.

The five stretches of roads are on S V Road from Chincholi bunder in Malad to Goregaon, Napean Sea Road, Vikhroli Parksite Road 17, Maulana Shakat Ali Road in Tardeo and Rajaram Mohan Roy Road from Khetwadi in Girgaum up to M K Road at Marine Drive.

A civic officer said that they will publicise the competition to get the best of the ideas. The officer added that this will serve as a platform for designers and the city administration to meet and pilot designs in the larger interest of the city.

“We want the concepts to be practical and keep in mind features of each area and the need for safe streets,” said the officer. “After all, we want the design to sustain in the long run.”
