Munger University bans entry of bikers without helmets

PATNA: Munger University has launched a massive awareness drive among its students about the new traffic rules implemented across the country from September 1.

Munger University vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Ranjit Kumar Verma said about 60,000 to 70,000 students have been enrolled in the current academic session for PG and UG level courses this year.

A large number of them have been coming to colleges on their own vehicles, he said, adding most of them hardly follow the new traffic rules either due to lack of awareness or wilful negligence.

Verma said he has issued directives to principals of the constituent and affiliated colleges located in Munger, Lakhisarai, Sheikhpura, Jamui and Khagaria districts to launch an awareness drive about new traffic rules. Besides, each college would also ensure that students do wear helmets and keep proper papers, including driving licence, he said, adding none of the students would be allowed to enter the university or its colleges on their bikes without helmets.

He said the university has also appealed to parents to send their wards with proper vehicle papers and ensure that they must wear helmets while driving a two-wheeler. “The university will start imposing fine on the delinquents,” he said, adding triple load and ‘laheria cut’ motorcycle driving have been completely banned on the university and college campuses.

Besides, the university is likely to tie up with a few neighbouring foreign countries to further develop academic and cultural activities to benefit students the most. However, the new university which is located in the district headquarters in Munger, is inaccessible due to lack of fast and direct communications, the VC said, adding the university could not hold international conferences or seminars due to lack of direct communication facilities to the university from state capital.

It was with this end in view that the university had sent a petition to the new Railway Board chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav to provide stoppage of New Delhi-Howrah Rajdhani Express or New Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express at Jamalpur station for two days in a week. This would facilitate scholars and academics from foreign countries or other places of the country to reach Munger easily to participate in national and international level conferences, he said, adding several reputed scientists and academics have already expressed their interest to participate in the international level conferences or seminars to be organized by the university in near future.
