Nagapattinam Trader hurls weight at cop during eviction

NAGAPATTINAM: A constable of the Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion at Nagapattinam sustained grievous injuries during an eviction drive held in Mayiladuthurai town, after one of the traders who was at the receiving end hurled a stone weight at the police team posted for protection. Four people have been arrested in this connection.




According to police, the municipal authorities had been in the process of evicting encroachments in and around the main roads of Mayiladuthurai town to ease traffic congestion since June 13.

When they commenced the drive in Vandikara Street between the Old Bus Stand and New Bus Stand, the platform vendors objected stating that their livelihood would be affected. Some CITU functionaries too supported the vendors, police said.

Subsequently, the officials held talks with the protesters.

When the officials began the drive on the second day on Tuesday, a group of vendors along with the CITU workers engaged in an altercation with the officials. During the heated arguments, one of the protesters hurled a stone weight at one of the police personnel from Special Police Battalion 10, identified later as Manikandan, 24.

The incident left the constable with injuries on his forehead. He was rushed to the government hospital in Mayiladuthurai where he underwent treatment.

Following the incident, based on a complaint by the authorities, police arrested Stalin, 43, Ganesan, 24, Durai Ganapathi, 40, Raveendran, 63, Mehanathan, Sivaraman and Ranjith. All of them have been booked under three sections and further investigations are on.
