Nagpur-based builder nabbed after two years

NAGPUR: The crime branch sleuths on Saturday arrested builder Hemant Jham, who was absconding in fraud cases since the last two years, from his house at Sonegaon.

Jham, one of the accused in Navodaya Bank fraud, has around 250 pending summons warrants against him from the district consumer court. The cops were looking for him since long.

TOI has reported several times about the judgments delivered by the consumer forum that the builder has duped gullible customers on the pretext of selling flats and houses.

Jham was also an accused in a case registered at Sonegaon police station in 2015 for allegedly duping investors in Kanhaiya City township.

The accused had accepted money from investors on the pretext of providing them flats and row houses. Rather than giving possession to the investors, he closed the project and fled.

Around 400 investors had filed complaints with the consumer forum. The court issued several summons but the accused never appeared before it.

An arrest warrant was issued against him, but the accused continuously evaded arrest by changing his locations. Thereafter, city police commissioner BK Upadhyay directed the crime branch to nab the accused.

The crime branch sleuths, led by senior PI Santosh Khandekar, received a tip-off about the accused’s location and nabbed him on Saturday. Jham was later handed over to Economic Offences Wing (EOW) which is currently investigating the Navodaya Bank fraud.
