NEET 2019: Tamil Nadu increases number of centers

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has more than doubled the number of exam centers to prevent medical aspirants from travelling to other states to write the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test ( NEET ).

From 210 in 2018, it had been increased to 520, said K A Sengottaiyan , state school education minister.

"Required infrastructure has been made available at all these centres as per Centre's guidelines. Last year, 1.17 lakh candidates took up NEET. There will be no issue even if more than 1.50 lakh take it up this year," he added.

Last year, enough centres were not set up in the state forcing students to travel to far away places like Jaipur in Rajasthan to write the test.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Sengottaiyan said a sum of Rs 248 crore had been released towards reimbursements for 25% admissions made in private matriculation schools under the Right for Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009.

Samagara Shiksha Abhiyan, nodal agency for implementing RTE effectively, started distributing funds to schools in Ariyalur from Thursday, said Sengottaiyan.
