New CP visits Choudwar jail in Cuttack, talks tough

BHUBANESWAR: Commissioner of police (CP) Sudhanshu Sarangi visited the Choudwar circle jail in Cuttack on Sunday and warned prisoners of stringent action if they indulged in crimes after their jail term ended.

This was the first time a CP directly interacted with jail inmates and told them that will be under surveillance.

Of the 1,100 prisoners, including undertrial prisoners and convicts, in the Choudwar jail, Sarangi spoke to at least 100 of them.

"I spoke to gangsters, robbers and snatchers. My intention is to identify criminals and keep a watch on them," said Sarangi, who assumed charge on August 21.

During his hour-long interaction, Sarangi tried to understand the motives and circumstances that drove the criminals to choose this path. He also took stock of their trials.

"I want to be familiarized with the anti-socials so that their movements can be tracked," Sarangi said.

The twin cities police chief has asked all police stations to create a database of prisoners who are out on bail. The inspectors in-charge have been instructed to monitor their activities to ensure peace and order in the city.

The CP was accompanied by Cuttack DCP Akhileshvar Singh, zonal ACPs and inspectors in-charge. The jail authorities were also asked to properly frisk visitors and prevent the entry of incriminating articles such as cell phones, ganja, cigarettes and gutka inside the cells.

Sarangi is likely to meet the inmates of the Jharpada special jail in Bhubaneswar next Sunday.
