New road in Margao to be named after Parrikar: Vijai

Margao: While the controversy surrounding the Jack de Sequeira statue is still fresh, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Wednesday hopped on to another contentious issue—naming the road from Arlem junction to Ravindra Bhavan junction after former chief minister Manohar Parrikar .

Sardesai on Wednesday held an inspection of the road repair work in progress along with officials of the public works department (PWD), electricity department, traffic police and others.

Automated traffic signals will also be set up at the Arlem junction.

Sardesai told reporters that a family member of the former defence minister would be invited for the road naming ceremony, to inaugurate the re-laid road. “This is the only road in Goa that has dedicated ducts for sewage, water supply, and fibre optic cables. Nearly Rs 50-60 crore has been spent on the road and other works like sewerage and underground cabling which was made possible only because of the help of Manohar Parrikar. As a mark of gratefulness to him, this modern road will be dedicated to his memory,” Sardesai said.

While eulogising Parrikar, Sardesai, in the same breath, took a dig at the current government. “Today, the situation is such that proposals for works amounting to even Rs 8-9 lakh are rejected stating that there are no funds. The state’s finances are in shambles,” he said.

Stressing that all objections will be overridden, Sardesai said, “It’s a council’s decision and we will do it.”
