Chess Prodigy D Gukesh Draws Inspiration From Dhoni & Djokovic Amidst Historic Triumph

Seventeen-year-old chess prodigy D Gukesh has etched his name in history books by becoming the youngest-ever challenger to the world title, surpassing a record held by the legendary Garry Kasparov.

Gukesh recently emerged victorious in the Candidates Chess Tournament held in Toronto, securing a spot to challenge reigning world champion Ding Liren of China later this year.

In an interview with PTI, Gukesh revealed his admiration for former India cricket captain MS Dhoni and tennis icon Novak Djokovic, citing their ability to thrive under pressure as a source of inspiration.

"I think the way Dhoni and tennis great Novak Djokovic handle themselves under immense pressure, they are big-game players and always come out on top and bring out their best whenever needed. That is why I am attracted to them," said Gukesh.

Gukesh's triumph not only signifies a remarkable achievement in chess but also exemplifies the mental resilience and strategic prowess he shares with his sporting idols.

Magnus Carlsen, the reigning world chess champion, has also been a source of motivation for Gukesh, who admires Carlsen's mental fortitude and approach to the game.

"There are a lot of things you can learn from him (Carlsen). Not just chess, but also the mental attitude. He has one of the best mentalities in the world in any sport, I would say," remarked Gukesh.

Reflecting on his own nerves and experiences, Gukesh acknowledged that all chess players face moments of anxiety but learn to manage them with time and practice.

"We all get nervous, and with experience, we all learn how to deal with it. Yeah, I guess some maturity and practice," he shared.

Looking ahead to his upcoming showdown with Ding Liren, Gukesh expressed eagerness to commence his training soon and anticipates an enjoyable preparation phase.

"My training for the final will start soon, and I hope it will be very enjoyable," he affirmed.

Gukesh's monumental achievement in the Candidates Chess Tournament drew praise from none other than Garry Kasparov, who hailed the young grandmaster as ‘the Indian earthquake in Toronto’.

Responding to Kasparov's commendation, Gukesh expressed profound gratitude, stating, "Kasparov is one of my heroes and one of the greatest chess players of all time, and to get a huge compliment and notice from him, it really means a lot."

While Gukesh's focus remains on chess, he remains an avid sports enthusiast, particularly drawn to tennis among other sports.

"Recently, I haven’t followed cricket a lot. But I enjoy all kinds of sports, especially tennis. I like to play some sports, and generally, I am just in love with sports," he remarked.

As Gukesh continues his journey towards the pinnacle of chess, his unwavering determination and admiration for sporting legends like Dhoni, Djokovic, and Carlsen serve as guiding lights, propelling him forward with each strategic move.
