Chess Prodigy D Gukesh Welcomed Home In Chennai After Candidates Triumph

Teen chess sensation D Gukesh received a rousing welcome as he touched down in his hometown after clinching victory at the prestigious Candidates Chess Tournament in Toronto.

The 17-year-old Grandmaster made history by securing a spot as the youngest challenger for the world title, drawing admiration from fans and chess enthusiasts worldwide.


A Triumphal Homecoming
Hundreds of eager supporters, including students from Velammal Vidyalaya, where Gukesh studies, gathered at the airport well before his arrival, eager to congratulate their hometown hero. As Gukesh emerged from the terminal amidst cheers and applause, he was greeted with garlands and the warm embrace of his family.

Words of Gratitude and Celebration
Speaking to the media amidst the jubilant crowd, Gukesh expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he received. “I feel very happy for this homecoming, this is a special achievement. I was in a good space since the beginning of the tournament, I had full confidence that I will emerge top in this tournament and luck was on my side as well,” he remarked, acknowledging the instrumental role played by his family, school, and sponsors in his journey to success.

“It’s good to see so many people enjoy chess…I thank the Tamil Nadu government. I thank my Appa, Amma, coach, friends, family, sponsor and my school for being alongside me and playing an amazing role in helping me win this tournament,” Gukesh added.

His parents, Padma and Rajinikanth, stood proudly by his side, celebrating their son's remarkable accomplishment.

Gukesh's triumph at the Candidates Tournament not only secured his place in chess history but also set a new milestone for Indian chess.

Surpassing the record set by legendary player Garry Kasparov, Gukesh's victory signifies a significant shift in the global chess landscape. His upcoming clash with reigning world champion Ding Liren promises to be a thrilling encounter, capturing the attention of chess enthusiasts worldwide.

Kasparov praised Gukesh’s performance, likening it to an "Indian earthquake in Toronto'' and highlighting the significant impact of India's presence at the Candidates Tournament on the global chess scene. Gukesh's victory included a notable win against fellow Indian talent R Praggnanandhaa, aged 18, adding to the impressive showing of five Indian participants, comprising three men and two women.

Gukesh's rise to prominence began when he obtained the title of India’s youngest Grandmaster at the age of 12 years, seven months, and 17 days in January 2019. With a current FIDE rating of 2743, Gukesh reached a peak rating of 2758 in September of the previous year.
