The Assam Football Association (AFA) has unveiled ambitious plans to elevate football infrastructure in the region to international standards. General Secretary Sangrang Brahma disclosed the association's intentions ahead of the India-Afghanistan 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, scheduled to take place in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Transformation of Nehru Stadium
Nehru Stadium, a symbol of sporting heritage in Assam, is poised for a significant transformation. Brahma announced that the stadium would undergo demolition and reconstruction, becoming an exclusive football venue capable of seating 30,000 spectators.

“Nehru Stadium will be demolished and rebuilt into a football-exclusive stadium which would be of international standard. It would be an exclusive football stadium of international standards in India. Work on it would start soon,” Brahma informed PTI Videos.

Focus on Grassroots Development
In addition to revamping Nehru Stadium, the AFA is committed to nurturing grassroots talent across the state. Brahma revealed plans to establish ten football academies in various locations throughout Assam. “We are planning to establish at least 10 academies in Assam in various locations. We also have a plan to establish a high-performance training centre that would be based in Guwahati,” Brahma affirmed. These academies aim to develop young footballers through structured training programmes.

High-Performance Training Centre
To further elevate the standard of football in Assam, the AFA intends to establish a high-performance training centre in Guwahati. This centre will provide elite athletes with access to world-class facilities and specialised coaching. "We also have a plan to establish a high-performance training centre that would be based in Guwahati," Brahma stated.
