No repoll needed in Theni: Elangovan

Madurai: Congress candidate in the Theni Lok Sabha constituency E V K S Elangovan has said that re-election should not be held in any of the booths in the constituency as the election was conducted there in a fair manner. He alleged that the transfer of EVMs from Coimbatore to Theni might have taken place because of deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam’s Varanasi visit, where he might have begged the Prime Minister to ensure victory for his son who was pitted against him (Elangovan).

Elangovan arrived in Theni on Wednesday following the tension that prevailed the previous evening at the district collectorate over the arrival of 50 EVMs from Coimbatore. He said that the AIADMK had tried to transport the machines with the help of the state chief electoral officer. He handed over a petition to Theni district collector Pallavi M Baldev demanding that the machines be sent back. He said there was a move to conduct repoll in two or three polling booths in Theni which should not be done.

The Theni district collector might have been unaware of the conspiracy behind the transfer of the EVMs, he said. However, AIADMK candidate P Ravindranath would not win the Lok Sabha election and Panneerselvam also will not continue in his post, he said. DMK’s Andipatti bypoll candidate Maharajan, Periyakulam candidate Saravanakumar, party district organizer Cumbum Ramakrishnan, CPM secretary Venkatesan was also present.
