North Goa cabbies defer strike owing to state politics

Calangute: The North Goa Tourist Taxi Owners’ Association (NGTTOA), which had last week given the state government seven days to shut down the GoaMiles taxi service, on Saturday said they have decided to defer any decision on their next course of action due to the ongoing political changes in government.

NGTTOA, at a press conference in Calangute on July 3, had demanded that Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) discontinue the app-based service within seven days, failing which they would go on a strike paralysing transport all over the state on the eve of the monsoon session of the Goa assembly which begins on Monday.

Speaking to TOI, a senior member of the NGTTOA executive committee said they had scheduled a meeting with GTDC’s top officials, but it could not take place due to the political “reshuffle “ which has taken place leading to the swearing-in of some new ministers, including Calangute MLA Michael Lobo.

“We will wait some time till the new ministers settle down and then decide on the next course of action. There is also a 10-day ultimatum given by other taxi unions this week,” he said.
