Nurses of Balasore medical launch cease-work after tiff with patient's attendant

Balasore: Nurses in Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital (FMMCH) in Balasore today launched cease-work stir resulting in disruption of medical services for a few hours following a tiff with a patient and her attendants. The nurses called off their stir after four hours when police intervened in the matter.

As per the reports, one of the staff nurses allegedly demanded Rs 1000 from a pregnant lady following delivery, but the patient’s relative only offered Rs 300. This reportedly led to an altercation.

“The nurse demanded Rs 1000 from us after the delivery got over but when we denied to give the amount and tried to settle cheaper, the nurse physically assaulted us,” one of the patient’s relatives said.

Following the incident, other people present in the ward allegedly gheraoed and manhandled the nurse and the patient’s family members lodged a complaint at the police outpost within the medical premises.

While on the other hand, the nurses at the hospital launched a cease-work alleging that their colleague was assaulted by the patient’s relatives.

“The entire story is fabricated as none of the nurses demanded money from the patient or their relatives. We are concerned about the safety of the nurses for which we will approach the superintendent,” said Usha Das, Chairman, Staff Nurse Community.

“Within 24 hours, we will complete our probe and take strict action against the guilty. The nurses have resumed services after getting assurance from us. Around ten police personnel will be deployed at the hospital to ensure safety of the staff nurses,” said Ranjan Kumar Padhi, CDMO, Balasore.

Police have detained the accused relative for further interrogation.
