October 10 deadline for Sultanpur Lodhi projects

Chandigarh: The Punjab government has set an October 10 deadine for completing development projects in Sultanpur Lodhi for the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak, said state principal secretary, local bodies, A Venu Prasad on Monday.

He made the statement after heading a meeting of the infrastructure and service committee which has been formed for preparing infrastructure for the event.

The state public works department has been entrusted the work of constructing an open-air auditorium at I K Gujral Punjab Technical University and ensure adequate lighting along Kali Bein rivulet. The state department of water resources is already cleaning, lining and fencing the left bank of Kali Bein.

The water supply and sanitation department has been asked to provide drinking water round-the-clock at all parking lots and langar sites. Prasad said the department would install eight tube wells for this. He said 5,000-litre water tanks would lso abe installed throughout the event area for water storage.

He said ATMs and stainless-steel troughs will be made available at 35 locations in the town. In all, 107 high-quality stainless-steel water troughs are being fabricated for water supply. Each trough would be 10 feet wide with arrangement of 5 taps on both sides.

Prasad said around 2,000 temporarily toilets and 1,500 urinals would be set up all across the event area within the city, parking and langar sites. Also, 125 bathing units and 50 special toilet units would also be set up by the water supply and sanitation department. He said over 1,100 workers of cleaning staff would ensure round-the-clock operation and maintenance of toilet units for the entire duration of the event.

He said that dedicated efforts were being put into place for odour management and protection of the groundwater from contamination. Karnesh Sharma, director of local government, said his department had been entrusted with 48 works. Of these, 37 have been completed and the remaining would be completed by September 30.
