Odisha: Sambalpur city under water after heavy rain

SAMBALPUR: Incessant heavy rain lashed Sambalpur on Saturday has caused a flood-like situation in the low-lying areas of the city.

Rainwater gushed into houses in Mining Colony, Sadak Ghat, Motijharan, Anguliapara, Charbhati, Hirakud Colony and many other areas. Several roads were waterlogged leading to traffic snarls and causing great inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians.

Laxmi talkies chowk was in knee-deep water.

Subhankar Mohanty, the enforcement officer of Sambalpur Municipal Corporation, said, "At least 1,000 people have been affected. Five relief centres have been opened for them. More centres will be opened."

Officials said the city's water is released into the Mahahnadi at three locations - Binakhandi, Balibandha and Chandan Nagar. However, since the water level in the Mahanadi increased following the discharge of floodwater from Hirakud dam, the sluice gates at the three locations were closed to check the river's backwater from inundating the city. As a result, there was a flood-like situation in the low-lying areas. Water is being pumped out to the Mahanadi using electric motors.
